Macadamia consumption in China has tripled between 2019 and 2024.
This growth has been accompanied by a notable shift in consumption patterns — from predominantly formal gifting occasions towards more frequent, informal snacking.
Despite Chinese consumers’ generally strong awareness of nutrition, perceptions of macadamias remain limited. Many continue to view them as fattening, overlooking their well-documented nutritional profile.
At the recent CFNA trade event, Professor Ma of Peking University emphasised the health benefits of macadamias, drawing attention to their high content of mono-unsaturated fats (MUFAs) and low glycaemic index. A video of the presentation can be viewed here:
Enhancing nutritional understanding is essential to ensuring sustained, high-value demand for macadamias in China. This will be a critical focus for the industry as we work to support long-term market development.
